About
GOKTURK-2 was Turkiye’s first high-resolution Earth observation satellite designed entirely by Turkish engineers, placed into its mission orbit during the 2012 launch campaign. The contract was signed between the Ministry of Defence, TUBITAK, and a business alliance of Turkish Aerospace and TUBITAK Space Technologies Research Institute, entering into force in May 2007 under the SAVTAG-1007 program. All engineering work — design, analysis, manufacture, assembly, integration and testing of the Structural, Thermal Control and Attitude/Orbit Determination and Control subsystems, harness design and manufacture, and the Attitude and Orbit Control Interface Module — was performed domestically by Turkish Aerospace, including build of the Structural Qualification Model, Qualification Model and Flight Model. GOKTURK-2 was launched from the Jiuquan launch center in China on 18 December 2012, with first signal received 12 minutes after launch, and downlinked imagery began arriving at the Ankara ground station shortly after commissioning. The program established Turkish Aerospace’s expert workforce and infrastructure for satellite design, assembly, integration and testing.
