LWiN® Device Software Stack

LWiN® (LoneWhisper® Intelligent Node) is Lacuna Space’s embedded software stack for IoT end-devices and gateways connecting to the LoneWhisper® Direct-to-Satellite network. Designed for resource-constrained microcontrollers, LWiN® runs on the device itself and autonomously handles all interactions with the satellite link — eliminating the need for application developers to implement satellite-specific radio protocols.

The software stack receives and processes satellite almanac broadcasts, computing upcoming pass windows based on device location and orbital mechanics. It manages device sleep schedules to minimize power consumption between passes, then wakes the device at the correct time, selects optimal frequency and spread-factor parameters based on satellite-broadcast spectrum scan data, and executes the LR-FHSS uplink when a satellite is overhead. This intelligent behavior is entirely self-contained within the LWiN® stack and transparent to the application layer.

LWiN® supports integration with standard LoRa chipsets and stacks, and can be paired with Lacuna’s MultiNode hardware or integrated by OEM device manufacturers who wish to add satellite connectivity to their own products. The stack enables any battery-powered IoT device to transmit data globally with minimal energy overhead, targeting applications from remote weather stations to livestock trackers and pipeline monitors.
