About

LoneWhisper® is Lacuna Space’s complete implementation of LoRa over satellite — an end-to-end system combining satellite gateways, almanac distribution, intelligent frequency and transmission-parameter selection, the LWiN® device software stack, and a ground-segment packet broker into a single, seamless platform delivering the world’s most efficient IoT connectivity from low Earth orbit.

The system is purpose-built for battery-powered sensors transmitting small, infrequent messages (for example, 30 bytes per day) from remote and rural locations where terrestrial networks are absent. Satellites actively broadcast pass timings to ground nodes via the almanac distribution system, so devices can sleep and wake only when a satellite is overhead — dramatically extending battery life. LWiN® software running on each node automatically manages sleep/wake cycles, data buffering, uplink timing, and frequency adaptation without requiring IoT developer LoRa expertise.

LoneWhisper® uses LR-FHSS, a low-power satellite adaptation of the LoRa® protocol, and is compatible with LoRaWAN sensors — allowing seamless extension of existing terrestrial LoRa networks to global satellite coverage. Lacuna operates fifth-generation satellite gateways providing the highest capacity LoRa-based gateway in orbit, enabling more messages per pass, more simultaneous devices, and greater resilience as the IoT market grows. Onboard spectrum scanners continuously map radio frequency usage and noise levels worldwide since 2020, enabling intelligent frequency management to avoid interference and optimize link quality.
