Lacuna Space is a UK-based satellite IoT connectivity company headquartered at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory on Harwell Campus, Oxfordshire. The company operates a global satellite network designed specifically for retrieving small but essential data packets from battery-powered sensors and mobile equipment located anywhere on Earth — including remote areas entirely unreachable by terrestrial networks.

Lacuna's technology stack is purpose-built for low-power IoT applications. Its LoneWhisper® protocol provides what the company describes as the world's most efficient satellite connectivity for IoT, enabling sensors to transmit data with minimal energy consumption for multi-year battery operation. The MultiNode hardware is the entry-point device for satellite-connected IoT deployments, while LWiN® is the companion smart software layer that manages satellite-connected devices and data flows. KonflexHub® serves as the centralized control platform for device management, data handling, and delivery.

The system's architecture serves three primary phases: sensors and equipment connect to communication nodes; battery-powered nodes transmit alerts and data via Lacuna's satellite constellation; and data is delivered to users securely and encrypted. Applications span precision agriculture (soil, crop, and livestock monitoring), environmental monitoring, utilities and metering, and blue economy (maritime) use cases. Lacuna partners with satellite operators, IoT device manufacturers, and system integrators to extend the network's reach and capability globally.
