About

The Motherboard Module (MBM) is part of the CubeSat Kit nanosatellite architecture and is classified as flight hardware (blue) — Flight Hardware | Flight Qualified | Space Proven. By adding a Pluggable Processor Module (PPM) to the MBM, the user creates a low-power, 8- or 16-bit MCU/DSC command-and-data-handling (C&DH) module for a CubeSat. An MBM + PPM occupies a standard 0.600 in (15.24 mm) tall module slot, typically at the base of a Pumpkin CubeSat Kit structure.

The MBM routes the MCU/DSC’s I/O pins to the 104-pin CubeSat Kit bus, and provides an RBF (Remove Before Flight) switch, an external +5Vdc power input, a USB device port, a battery-backed RTC subsystem, an SPI-interface SD Card, an extra power header, and +5V and GND for use by PC/104 connectors.

The module is offered in Stackthrough and Non-Stackthrough variants (both available in Revision E and Revision D). Each unit includes one complete MotherBoard Module; the RBF switch is mounted but not wired to anything, and no SD Card or RTC backup battery (BR1225 size) are included. The non-stackthrough version is intended to be mounted on a CubeSat Kit Base Plate Assembly at one end of a CubeSat — the Base Plate Assembly’s metal provides the guide tube for the RBF pin and other features; for other locations the stackthrough version should be used, along with the RBF Bracket Kit.

The MBM is compatible with all CubeSats conforming to the CubeSat Kit Bus standard (104-pin connector), and specifically with the Pluggable Processor Modules PPM A1, A2, A3, B1, D1, D2, E1, as well as the Base Plate Assembly, Base Plate Assembly for AntS Antenna, Chassis Walls, CubeSat Kit Pro Chassis Walls, RBF Bracket Kit, and RBF Pin & Lanyard. Because schematics, software, test code and other documentation are only provided with a complete CubeSat Kit purchase, the MBM may only be ordered a la carte once a customer has purchased a complete CubeSat Kit; purchasing restrictions apply and a product request may be required.
