About
The Linear EPS Module is a low-cost Electrical Power System (EPS) with 10-20Wh of battery energy. It is designed to power a CubeSat stack of modules during development, and provides attached modules with +7.4Vdc (nominal), +5Vdc and +3.3Vdc rails. Recharging is via the built-in microUSB connector or from system +5V_USB. A three-segment LED bargraph indicates progress when in charging mode and State-of-Charge (SOC) when in discharging mode. An optional extra battery doubles its energy capacity from 10Wh to 20Wh. The Linear EPS Rev E and later includes a complete command and telemetry interface over I2C via its onboard SupMCU.
The Linear EPS Module is explicitly Development Hardware and is Not for Space Use: it is not intended for use in space and has no provisions for interfacing to solar cells. It provides quiet +5Vdc and +3.3Vdc power from a battery source, an inexpensive way to power a CubeSat for demonstrations, remote operation with testing chambers, and balloon flights.
The module automatically switches to charge mode when +5V_USB on the CubeSat Kit Bus Connector is present; when charging, no power is provided on +5V_SYS and VCC_SYS, and VBATT is indeterminate. When +5V_USB is removed, the module switches to discharge mode, providing +5Vdc to +5V_SYS and +3.3Vdc to VCC_SYS; VBATT is the voltage of a series-connected pair (“2S”) of Lithium Polymer batteries (6-8.4Vdc). The Lithium-Polymer batteries are protected against overvoltage (OV), overcurrent (OC) and undervoltage (UV). Each unit ships as one complete Linear EPS Module with either 10Wh capacity (standard battery) or 20Wh capacity (double battery), and is compatible with all CubeSats that conform to the CubeSat Kit Bus standard with its 104-pin connector.
