About

The Intelligent Protected Lithium Battery Module (BM2) is Pumpkin flight hardware, described as flight qualified and space proven, that provides a protected lithium-ion battery pack with state-of-charge (SoC) reporting for CubeSats and small satellites. It is electrically compatible with most CubeSats and small satellites; a compatible Electrical Power System (EPS) is required to charge the batteries. The BM2 can power loads directly at battery voltage and can serve as a power source for a compatible EPS. In typical applications, a compatible EPS charges the batteries when external power (e.g., via solar panels) is available, and discharges the batteries when they are the only available power source (e.g., during eclipse). An EPS used with the BM2 typically requires the BM2 to be configured for the battery voltage the EPS supports (2, 3, or 4 lithium cells in series).

The BM2’s minimum interface is via its V+ (sometimes called BAT_POS) and V- ((D)GND) terminals; additional functionality is available via SCL_SYS, SDA_SYS, -RESET and OFF_VCC terminals. Pumpkin offers a Battery Bus Interface Module (BBIM) to connect the BM2 to a standard 104-pin CubeSat bus connector. The BM2 has a 100x100mm footprint when its L-shaped mounting brackets are installed; this footprint is directly compatible with Pumpkin’s SUPERNOVA nanosatellite architecture and may be compatible with many others. The brackets can be removed to mount the module inside a 1U/1.5U/2U/3U CubeSat. The BM2 is described as electrically compatible with all known current small-satellite dispensers and launch vehicles.

Configuration options include (B) Battery Configuration: 2S4P (8 cells, 5.2-8.4V), 3S2P (6 cells, 7.8-12.6V), or 4S2P (8 cells, 10.4-16.8V); (C) Individual Cell Capacity: 2500mAh (72Wh with 8 cells), 3000mAh (86Wh with 8 cells), or 3500mAh (100Wh with 8 cells), plus an option for user-provided 18650 cells (+$1000); and Power Connectors: standard 2 x 14-pin, or user-provided captive harness (+$1000). Includes one BM2 Battery Module; one shorting block for RBF (Remove-Before-Flight) inhibit during transport; one 300mm 14-conductor power & control harness (flying leads, or with connectors on both ends for use with the EPSM1); one 300mm 2-conductor RBF inhibit harness with flying leads; one 300mm 2-conductor Separation inhibit harness with flying leads; one Pumpkin USB Debug Adapter with USB A-to-B cable (one per invoice regardless of BM2 quantity ordered); a downloadable Windows-based GUI for firmware updates; and a downloadable Python-based GUI for SCPI-based command and telemetry development (requires a Total Phase Aardvark I2C/SPI Host Adapter, not included). A variant with a Battery Switch Module (BSM) is also shown on the product page.
