About
UNIKA is a light, compact, powerful preload device for tensioning Hold Down and Release Mechanisms on spacecraft, typically for solar arrays or other deployables. Preload is achieved electronically via controlled heating of a shape memory alloy element in a force-feedback loop using an internal load cell. It is corrosion resistant, uses no fluid or grease, has no parts under heavy friction, and can be safely operated in cleanroom environments, designed for small or difficult-to-access locations such as HDRM tunnels in solar arrays. Outside cleanrooms it can be hand-held and used outdoors in other industries. UNIKA is being developed under the ESA GSTP programme, with expected qualification in Q1 2026.
