About QinetiQ Space

QinetiQ traces its space heritage to the 1950s and 1960s through the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE) at Farnborough, where British scientists pioneered satellite technologies, thermal vacuum testing, and early electric propulsion research. In 2001, the UK Ministry of Defence privatised its Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA), creating QinetiQ as a commercial entity that floated on the London Stock Exchange in 2006. The organisation retained the RAE's world-class test infrastructure and deep space engineering expertise spanning more than half a century.

QinetiQ describes itself as a pioneer in the space domain, with more than 100 mission-years in orbit across military, security, and civil sectors. The company operates across the full space mission lifecycle: secure satellite communications, Position Navigation and Timing (PNT) with its Q40 GNSS receiver family, Space Domain Awareness, electric propulsion (T5/T6/T7 ion thrusters), space ranging and test/evaluation services, and Free Space Optical Communications (FSOC). The company employs over 250 engineers and specialist technicians in its space division.

QinetiQ's electric propulsion products have substantial flight heritage: the T5 thruster accumulated over 36,000 hours on ESA's GOCE satellite, while the T6 — described as 'the world's most advanced ion thruster' — propels ESA's BepiColombo mission to Mercury using 4.5 kW and 250 mN of thrust per unit. The company operates some of Europe's largest electric propulsion test facilities at Farnborough, including a 3.8 × 10 m large vacuum chamber. The Bracer tactical satellite radio, Q40 secured GNSS receivers, and Northstar autonomy software extend QinetiQ's space-enabled technology into defence and national security applications.
