About

Firefly is Pixxel’s hyperspectral Earth observation satellite platform, designed to deliver detailed spectral imagery across hundreds of narrow, contiguous wavelength bands spanning the visible through shortwave infrared spectrum. Unlike conventional RGB or multispectral satellites that capture a handful of broad spectral bands, hyperspectral sensors like Firefly enable identification of specific chemical and material signatures on the Earth’s surface.

The Firefly constellation supports applications including precision agriculture (early detection of crop nutrient deficiencies, water stress, and disease before visible symptoms appear), mining and mineral exploration (surface mineral composition mapping to guide exploration targeting), environmental monitoring (methane leak detection, water quality assessment, and pollution tracking), and defense/intelligence applications requiring material identification beyond what visual-spectrum imagery can provide.

Pixxel is building toward a global constellation of Firefly satellites to provide frequent revisit coverage, with data delivered through analytics-ready products and APIs for direct integration into customer workflows. The company has secured government contracts including collaboration with the US National Reconnaissance Office, positioning Firefly data for both commercial analytics markets and national security applications requiring precise material and chemical signature detection from orbit.
