About
Astranis Vanguard, unveiled in November 2025, is a fully integrated beyond-line-of-sight (BLOS) communications product that combines Astranis’s operational GEO satellite infrastructure with best-in-class partner hardware to create a portable, air-gapped MANET capability. The system is designed for defense, disaster response, and remote industrial operations where traditional terrestrial communications are unavailable, degraded, or potentially compromised.
The Vanguard system leverages the onboard software-defined radio of an operational Astranis GEO satellite to create a private, dedicated communications network within the satellite’s beam footprint — approximately 2,250 km across. No data traverses the public internet; the air-gapped architecture keeps all communications fully private. The ground segment integrates Persistent Systems MPU5 broadband MANET radios with flat-panel user terminals: Kymeta’s mobile electronically steered array terminals for vehicle-mounted or manpack use, and Satcube’s flat-panel terminals for stationary installations.
For defense customers, dismounted or mounted teams can deploy terminals and immediately form a peer-to-peer mesh network supporting push-to-talk voice, live drone video feeds, and secure data exchange for command-and-control and situational awareness in austere or contested environments.
