About
The Ascent Solar EP-500V HDK is a high-voltage solar array solution purpose-built for spacecraft using electric propulsion (EP). By outputting 500 V directly from the photovoltaic array — eliminating DC-DC power conversion stages — the EP-500V HDK substantially reduces the total mass and complexity of the propulsion power subsystem. This is critical for missions where every gram saved in the power system translates to additional propellant capacity.
The EP-500V HDK leverages Ascent’s unique ability to monolithically tune CIGS thin-film modules to any voltage output, packaged in ESPA and ESPA Grande flatpack folding arrays compatible with standard rideshare launch configurations. Electric propulsion thrusters perform most efficiently when powered at high voltage; traditional solar arrays at 28–100 V require large power processing units to step voltage up, adding mass and thermal load. The EP-500V HDK’s direct high-voltage output streamlines this architecture.
