Thales Alenia Space (Blackjack/SDA)

Thales Alenia Space is a Franco-Italian space technology company formed in 2007 as a joint venture between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%), with corporate headquarters in Cannes, France, and major industrial sites in Toulouse (France), Rome, Turin and L'Aquila (Italy), plus facilities across Spain, Belgium, the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Poland and Luxembourg. With roughly 8,500 employees, the company designs and builds satellite platforms, payloads, orbital infrastructure and scientific instruments for telecommunications, Earth observation, navigation, exploration and defence customers.

On the telecommunications side, Thales Alenia Space markets two core geostationary platform lines — the all-electric Spacebus NEO (payload power up to 20 kW, launch mass up to 7.6 tonnes, 15-year design life) and the fully digital, in-orbit reconfigurable Space INSPIRE — and is prime contractor for Telesat's Lightspeed low Earth orbit broadband constellation, supplying satellites in the 700-750 kg class equipped with optical inter-satellite links. The company is also a long-standing contributor to orbital infrastructure programmes, including the ISS Columbus module and the pressurized cargo module of Northrop Grumman's Cygnus resupply spacecraft.

In the defence and institutional domain, Thales Alenia Space builds military and dual-use satellites (e.g. COSMO-SkyMed radar Earth observation for the Italian Ministry of Defence, and government telecommunications satellites for European operators) and contributed early LEO constellation system-design work — via a 2017-2018 consortium with Maxar/SSL — to Telesat's broadband network concept, which DARPA separately evaluated for potential dual-use links to its Blackjack programme; the company has not been named as a DARPA Blackjack or U.S. Space Development Agency Tranche satellite-bus prime contractor.
