About
MicroGEO is Astranis’s proprietary small geostationary satellite platform designed to make broadband internet from GEO orbit economically viable for regional telecom operators, governments, and internet service providers who cannot justify the $200–300 million investment required for a traditional large GEO communications satellite.
The MicroGEO platform weighs approximately 400 kg — roughly 10x lighter than a traditional GEO communications satellite — and delivers up to 10+ Gbps of total capacity to a single dedicated customer. The entire capacity is exclusive to the purchasing customer, with no shared bandwidth, enabling guaranteed service quality for rural broadband, maritime, government, and remote industrial applications. Pricing and delivery timelines are substantially compressed compared to large GEO programs, making dedicated satellite broadband accessible to customers previously priced out of the market.
The platform’s core technological differentiator is its fully software-defined radio (SDR) payload, allowing beam patterns, frequency allocations, and power profiles to be reprogrammed in orbit throughout the satellite’s lifetime. This enables customers to adapt coverage as their subscriber base shifts geographically, respond to regulatory frequency reallocation, and upgrade modulation efficiency as ground terminal technology improves — without requiring a physical replacement satellite. MicroGEO satellites use Astranis’s proprietary ground network for telemetry, tracking, and command, with customer traffic delivered via Ku or Ka-band to standard VSAT terminals.
