About

Alén Space’s software-defined radio (SDR) communication payload provides small satellite operators with reconfigurable communication capability that can be adapted after launch, rather than being fixed at the time of manufacture. Traditional satellite communication hardware locks in frequency bands, modulation schemes, and data rates during design — Alén Space’s SDR-based approach allows these parameters to be modified via software update once the satellite is already on orbit.

This flexibility is particularly valuable for IoT connectivity missions and technology demonstration satellites, where operators may need to adjust communication parameters based on regulatory changes, evolving customer requirements, or lessons learned from initial operations. The payload supports multiple protocol implementations and can be reconfigured to interoperate with different ground segment architectures without requiring hardware replacement.

The SDR payload integrates with Alén Space’s CubeSat and small satellite platforms, or can be supplied as a standalone subsystem for integration into customer-designed spacecraft. Applications include IoT sensor network connectivity, technology demonstration of new communication protocols, and flexible mission architectures where communication requirements may evolve during the satellite’s operational lifetime.
