University of Canterbury

The University of Canterbury (UC) was founded in 1873 in Christchurch, New Zealand, making it one of Australasia's oldest universities. UC is particularly strong in engineering, science, and technology education and research, with significant contributions to New Zealand's emerging space sector. The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Department of Physics and Astronomy both engage with satellite systems, space weather, and remote sensing.

UC is embedded in Christchurch's growing aerospace ecosystem, which includes the nearby Spaceport New Zealand (the first licensed spaceport in Australasia) used by Rocket Lab for some missions, the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, and a growing constellation of New Zealand space startups. The university operates the Mount John Observatory near Lake Tekapo, New Zealand's premier optical observatory, contributing to asteroid tracking, exoplanet research, and gravitational microlensing studies as part of the international MOA (Microlensing Observations in Astrophysics) collaboration. UC regularly produces engineers and scientists who join Rocket Lab, Weta Workshop's spatial division, and other space-adjacent New Zealand companies.
