About National University of Singapore (NUS)
The National University of Singapore (NUS) was founded in 1905 and is consistently ranked as Asia's leading university (QS World Ranking #8 globally, 2025). The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering hosts the NUS STAR (Space Technology and Research) Lab, which has been the engine of NUS's satellite programme.
NUS's most prominent space achievements are the VELOX CubeSat series: VELOX-I (1.3 kg) launched in November 2015 on PSLV-C29 as a technology validation mission; VELOX-II (3.8 kg) launched in December 2015 on the same PSLV; and VELOX-CI (3.5 kg) launched in February 2018 on PSLV-C40 for AIS ship-tracking with an innovative imaging payload. Together these missions demonstrated NUS's full-stack capability to design, integrate, test, and operate small satellites.
NUS also participates in international CubeSat programmes including the QB50 thermosphere research constellation, and its STAR Lab faculty collaborate with DSTA (Defence Science and Technology Agency) and Singapore's Ministry of Defence on dual-use space technologies. NUS graduates are embedded throughout Singapore's space economy, including at ST Engineering's satellite division, DSO National Laboratories, and the Singapore Space and Technology Association.
