National Physical Laboratory (NPL)

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is the UK's national measurement standards laboratory, established in 1900 and headquartered in Teddington, Middlesex. NPL develops and maintains the fundamental physical measurement standards underpinning the UK's science, technology, and commercial sectors, including the world's most accurate atomic clocks which underpin global timing and navigation systems. NPL's space-related work spans precision time and frequency standards for satellite navigation (GPS, Galileo, BeiDou), satellite laser ranging (SLR) for precise orbit determination, calibration of Earth observation instruments and data, space weather monitoring, quantum technologies for future satellite systems, and electromagnetic compatibility testing for satellite hardware. NPL is a key partner for ESA, the UK Space Agency, and commercial satellite operators requiring traceable measurement data to ensure the quality and reliability of satellite-derived information products.
