Kongsberg Gruppen is a Norwegian industrial and defense technology group founded in 1814 with roots in armaments manufacturing. The group's space activities are conducted primarily through its Defence & Aerospace division, providing satellite ground systems, optical instruments, attitude and orbit control subsystems, and space technology services for Norwegian national programs, ESA missions, and international commercial customers.

Kongsberg has supplied ground systems for Norwegian satellite programs including the NorSat and AISSat maritime surveillance satellite series, optical instruments for environmental monitoring, and technical support to ESA Copernicus and Galileo ground infrastructure. The company leverages Norwegian expertise in precision engineering, antenna systems, and software-defined ground stations developed over decades of supporting Arctic and maritime surveillance missions.

The space division collaborates closely with the Norwegian Space Agency (NOSA), the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI), and ESA's ESTEC facility to develop next-generation satellite ground systems and space technology. Norway's strategic interest in maritime surveillance and Arctic monitoring has driven sustained investment in Kongsberg's satellite technology capabilities, including miniaturized AIS and VHF data exchange (VDES) payloads for shipboard tracking and safety of navigation.
