About Czech Technical University in Prague

The Czech Technical University in Prague (CTU) was founded in 1707 by decree of Emperor Josef I, making it the oldest non-military technical university in Europe and one of the oldest engineering schools in the world. With over 17,000 students across 8 faculties, CTU covers civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, nuclear sciences, architecture, and information technology. The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering both participate in space technology research.

CTU has been a partner in the VZLUSAT programme — Czech Republic's most successful nanosatellite series. VZLUSAT-1 (2U CubeSat) was launched in June 2017 on ISRO's PSLV-C38 as part of the international QB50 thermosphere research constellation. Developed primarily by the Czech Aerospace Research Centre (VZLU) with CTU as an institutional partner, it carried a coded aperture miniaturised X-ray telescope among other payloads. VZLUSAT-2, a 3U CubeSat, followed in January 2022 on SpaceX Falcon 9 Transporter-3, with CTU's Faculty of Electrical Engineering contributing subsystems.

CTU's space activities extend to satellite navigation systems, radar signal processing, space-grade electronics research, and robotics for space applications. The university is an active participant in ESA-funded research programmes and collaborates with DLR, European aerospace industry, and the Czech Space Office.
