Vega C Launch Vehicle
European small satellite launch vehicle — 4-stage solid + liquid upper stage, ~2,300 kg to SSO, ESA/Arianespace program, manufactured by Avio in Colleferro, Italy.
Description
Vega C is Avio's second-generation European small satellite launch vehicle, an evolution of the original Vega rocket with increased payload capacity and reduced launch cost per kilogram. Developed in partnership with the European Space Agency and marketed by Arianespace, Vega C provides Europe's dedicated capability for small and medium satellite launches to sun-synchronous and low Earth orbits.
The vehicle uses a four-stage configuration: three solid rocket motor stages (P120C, Zefiro 40, Zefiro 9) providing the majority of the ascent thrust, followed by the AVUM+ (Attitude and Vernier Upper Module) liquid propellant upper stage for precise final orbit insertion and multiple payload deployment sequencing. The P120C first stage, a larger evolution of the original Vega's P80 stage, is shared with the Ariane 6 heavy-lift launcher as a strap-on booster, providing manufacturing synergies between Europe's two current launch vehicle families.
Vega C achieved its first flight in July 2022 and offers approximately 2,300 kg payload capacity to a 700 km sun-synchronous orbit — a significant increase over the original Vega's capability. The vehicle supports both dedicated single-satellite missions and rideshare configurations carrying multiple smallsats via dispenser systems, serving European institutional customers (ESA, EU Copernicus program) as well as commercial satellite operators.
