Avio S.p.A. traces its roots to Italian rocket propulsion development dating back decades, with the modern company established in 2002 and headquartered in Colleferro, Italy, near Rome. Avio is the prime contractor and manufacturer of the Vega family of European small satellite launch vehicles, developed in partnership with the European Space Agency (ESA) and Arianespace, providing dedicated launch capability for small and medium payloads to sun-synchronous and low Earth orbits.

The Vega program has evolved through multiple generations: the original Vega (first flight 2012), Vega C (first flight 2022) with increased payload capacity and reduced cost per kilogram, and Vega E in development featuring a new upper stage using a liquid oxygen/methane engine. Avio manufactures the vehicle's solid rocket motors — including the P80, Zefiro 40, and Zefiro 9 stages — leveraging Italian solid propulsion expertise developed over decades of European launcher cooperation.

Beyond the Vega vehicle itself, Avio produces solid rocket boosters and motor components for the Ariane 6 heavy-lift launcher developed by ArianeGroup, contributing critical propulsion hardware to Europe's full range of launch vehicles. The company also develops space propulsion technology for defense applications and continues to invest in next-generation propulsion systems to maintain European independent access to space.
