About Alcântara Space Center
The Alcântara Space Center (CLA — Centro de Lançamento de Alcântara) is a Brazilian launch facility located near the equator in Maranhão state, operated by the Brazilian Air Force (FAB). Founded in 1983, its strategic location just 2.3° south of the equator provides significant fuel savings for geostationary satellite launches compared to higher-latitude sites. The center has hosted launches of the VLS rocket and suborbital missions, and is part of Brazil's Amazonia-1 program. In 2019, Brazil signed a Technology Safeguards Agreement with the USA, opening the site to commercial and foreign launches.
