Alcantara Space Center

Alcântara Space Center (Centro de Lançamento de Alcântara, CLA) is a Brazilian space launch facility operated by the Brazilian Air Force (Força Aérea Brasileira, FAB), located on Alcântara island in Maranhão State, Brazil. Situated near the equator at approximately 2.3° South latitude, Alcântara offers a significant orbital mechanics advantage for GEO and low-inclination LEO launches, reducing the propellant required compared to higher-latitude launch sites and allowing heavier payloads for equivalent launch vehicles. The centre has served Brazilian space launch activities including the VLS-1 sounding rockets and is involved in the planned launch of the Brazilian VLM micro-launch vehicle, and has hosted international launch agreements with the United States Space Force and private launch companies.

Inaugurated in 1983, the base has supported decades of Brazilian sounding-rocket campaigns (Sonda, VS-30, VS-40, VSB-30) in partnership with agencies such as DLR and CNES, alongside the domestic VLS-1 orbital launch vehicle program. The site suffered a major setback in August 2003 when a VLS-1 rocket exploded on its launch pad during pre-launch preparations, killing 21 technicians; the base was later rebuilt and modernised. In 2019 Brazil and the United States signed a Technology Safeguards Agreement (TSA) opening Alcântara to US-linked commercial launch operators, and the center has since been positioned as a candidate site for small-satellite launch providers seeking an equatorial location on the Atlantic coast.
